Karen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with years of experience in community mental health agencies, schools, and, more recently, a restoration of competency program. Karen has helped individuals navigate life transitions, manage and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and address parenting and relationship challenges. With a diverse background and a nonjudgmental approach, she creates a warm, supportive environment where clients can heal, grow, and make meaningful changes in their lives.
In working with men with schizophrenia it can be a challenge for them to see and/or accept that treatment is vital to them having a chance to function well in the community vs living an ongoing cycle of hospitalizations and incarcerations. One gentleman who came to our program twice, finally understood the need to remain treatment compliant and this took time, relationship building and trust before he could start to see this. Everyone is worth that time and effort, no matter what the challenge is and I'm thrilled to know that, as of today, he has been working and thriving for almost two full years.
I will take some time to listen and learn about you and I want to know what you want to change, what you feel is "wrong" but also what is going well, too, and how you achieved that situation. We will work to find ways to have more of life feel and be "on track" and satisfying to you and establish goals that are meaningful and achievable, one step at a time.
The first session would be an intake where I learn about you and you can of course ask questions about me and the process. So there will be plenty of questions, listening, and documenting and we will start to develop a plan, to establish some goals. I will reflect back to you what I'm hearing, to do my best to make sure that I truly understand what you want and need out of the process as you understand it at this stage. And if anything changes along the way, we will work together to tweak or change the direction of treatment, as necessary.
I love to hold the space for people, to show the kind of understanding and acceptance that helps people truly accept and love themselves, so they can allow themselves to heal and grow. It's truly an honor and one I don't take lightly.
